The new Sky channel will be fully programmed, produced and developed in-house, by Rok teams in Lagos and London. Heading up Rok is Mary Njoku, an award-winning Nollywood actress and film producer who’s spent over 12 years at the heart of Nigerian filmmaking. The new channel will be supported by Iroko, the VC-backed African technology and entertainment broadcaster and content distributor.

Speaking on the launch, Rok CEO Mary Njoku says: “Nollywood’s appeal is truly global; it is not just for Africans, but for film fans in general. As a production house, we have been obsessed with curating amazing African content and telling African stories our way, and with the launch of Rok on Sky, we can bring our stories to millions more.  This channel is an unashamed celebration of all things Nollywood, but more than that, a celebration of African stories – in our own words, with our own characters, with our own drama”.

“In its short but busy history, Rok has become synonymous with edgy, distinct content, depicting the full gamut of Nigerian life. Rok is fortunate to have worked with so many of the screen greats – the likes of, Mercy Johnson, Mercy Aigbe Gentry, Ini Edo, Desmond Elliot, John Dumelo, to name but a few. These actors are instrumental in bringing our storytelling to life. We are also blessed to have a dedicated, hard-working and creative production team, who work tirelessly to ensure we release amazing content. Together, as the Rok family, we are now bringing our beloved Nollywood content onto its biggest platform yet – Sky”.

Rok will lead Nollywood fans in the UK to content they’ll love, and whilst the typical Nollywood audience is currently made up of a predominantly African and Caribbean demographic, those behind the channel hope to attract an even broader audience, thanks to the hyper-modern, original content.

Timed to celebrate Nigeria’s 56th Independence Day anniversary, Rok on Sky will launch with a bang on the 29th September, followed by a Gala launch in London at 8 Northumberland on 30th September. Nollywood glitterati, including Alexx Ekubo, Chioma Chukwuka-Akpotha, John Dumelo, Oge Okoye, Mercy Aigbe Gentry, Ini Edo, Annie Idibia, Yul Edochie, Jackie Appiah, Nse Ikpe-Etim, Patience Ozokwor, Segun Arinze, Funke Akindele and many more have already been confirmed on the guestlist, with a red carpet hosted by presenter Denrele Edun.

Mary concludes, “We have so many Nollywood stars travelling to London to celebrate the launch of our new channel; this is unheard of until now. London won’t know what has hit it – Nollywood is going to take over the city. We’re also hoping to see many of our fans at the Rok on Sky gala launch as well – we are eternally grateful to all the Rok fans who’ve been with us along the way”. #RokOnSky

Nollywood Takes Over London! Mercy Johnson, Ramsey Nouah and Mary Njoku Hit the Red Carpet for Thy Will Be Done Premiere, London

Some of Nollywood’s biggest stars made cinema history at the BFI IMAX, London, last night as they attended the star-studded world premiere of Thy Will Be Done, a ROK Studios film directed by the award-winning Obi Emelonye. This is the first time an independent movie has premiered at the 500 seat BFI IMAX and Nollywood fans turned out in their hundreds to catch a glimpse of their favourite stars and to watch the very first screening, which was sold out.

The crowds went wild for a glimpse of Mercy Johnson, Ramsey Nouah and Mary Njoku and were thrilled that a Nollywood movie was given such a fitting platform. They were also joined on the night by His Excellency Chief Igbinedion, the Esama of Benin City.

Nollywood (Nigerian Hollywood) is the world’s second largest film industry in the world, in terms of output and is the African Diaspora’s most popular form of entertainment. On the popular Internet platform iROKOtv, more people log in from London than the whole of Nigeria, hence the decision to screen the movie at the BFI IMAX.

Jason Njoku of Rok Studios says: ‘Rok Studios has huge ambitions in terms of re-energising Nollywood and producing international-standard cinema from Nigeria. Thy Will Be Done, for us, is the blueprint, the gold standard, if you will, in terms of quality and awesome storytelling that we hope will now define Nollywood’
Mercy Johnson and Obi Emelonye
Director Obi Emelonye says: ‘Thy Will Be Done is an eloquent example of what I call aspirational Nollywood or indeed aspirational African cinema- excellent African story with bold pretensions of grandeur, which has squeezed every ounce of commercial value from a budget that cannot shoot a short in other territories.’

Thy Will Be Done is the story of Pius (Ramsey Nouah), a happily married pastor in charge of a large church in Lagos, Nigeria. But when his first wife (Mary Njoku) that he buried 7 years ago suddenly shows up, his world is thrown into turmoil. His present wife (Mercy Johnson-Okojie) tries to fight her corner but Pius has a choice to make…between his calling and his wives; between old sins and new loyalties; between taking firm action and surrendering to God’s will. Weakened by guilt and overwhelmed by sensational revelations, nothing would have prepared Pius for how rapidly things would descend into violent chaos…for hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.

Thy Will Be Done will be screened in cinemas across Nigeria from March 2015.

RMD is currently battling with Live threatening sickness now, this is evident from this picture. May God preserve his life and heal him For us”.

Before and Now

Richard last public outing was on the 9th of May to honour the Nollywood icon and producer Amaka Igwe who sadly passed away from asthma related ailment on the 29th of April 2014. Whatever the ailment is, we wish a speedy recovery for Richard as we still want him to set our hearts aflutter.
