Ford – Helping Deliver Healthcare In Africa

Ford Sensor Technology Applied to Motorcycles for New Mobility Insights; Improves Medical Care for Rural Africans

Ford is now equipping motorcycles with sensor kits inspired by its OpenXC hardware platform to map areas of community health care services in rural West Africa. Capturing data on additional transportation types to help researchers detect patterns and develop new mobility solutions

  • Researchers have used OpenXC technology to collect real-time data from vehicles to better understand driving habits and help create new, innovative features for today’s car
  • OpenXC has been used in several experiments tied to Ford Smart Mobility, the company’s plan to take connectivity, mobility, autonomous vehicles, the customer experience and data and analytics to the next level. Learnings could be expanded to other transportation modes – helping ambulance and emergency services providers improve efficiency across the world

Ford is expanding its use of sensor technology to motorcycles, allowing researchers and programmers to better understand how cars, bikes and other modes of transportation in combination can create new mobility solutions and help make people’s lives better – including improving how healthcare is delivered rural West Africa.

“OpenXC started as a project to make a car send a tweet five years ago, but has since become a platform, or an ‘Internet of mobility’ that allows us to use data to better understand how people move around the world,” said Ken Washington, Ford vice president, Research and Advanced Engineering. “Now, the same open innovation mentality behind OpenXC has inspired our team to create a sensor kit for bicycles and motorcycles to learn how other transportation options might best serve people in urban, suburban and rural areas, including improving their health.”

Ford’s open-source hardware and software kit provides real-time access to vehicle data, such as sensors, GPS receiver and vehicle speed. Ford has been using OpenXC to support some of its Ford Smart Mobility experiments for more than a year.

The company is gathering and analyzing vehicle data collected by OpenXC as part of Ford Smart Mobility, its plan to take connectivity, mobility, autonomous vehicles, the customer experience, and data and analytics to the next level.

Data-driven motorcycles

The broad insights learned from vehicle data, including how people drive and use their cars, first inspired Ford researchers to create a sensor kit for bicycles to collect additional data. Now, the company is rolling out the new sensor kit to motorcycles helping Riders for Health.

The medical services group collects GPS data and mapping coordinates to reach people who need medical care – vaccines, medications and live-saving hospital care – in rural West Africa.

Ford helped Riders for Health improve its maintenance systems and vehicle fleet logistics, equipping Ford Ranger pickups with OpenXC technology. This allows Riders for Health to track stops, timing and routes for their work in The Gambia.

The data collected also is being used to create maps of remote regions – a first.

After learning that more than half of the group’s fleet of service vehicles are motorcycles that cannot capture the right level of data, Ford created a new sensor kit that will be upfitted on 50 motorcycles early next year.

“Our goal is to understand what mobility means to people who don’t have access to their own vehicles,” said Arthur Zysk, Ford research analyst who leads the project. “Ford’s commitment to smart mobility innovation is driving real, measurable change.”

Longer-term lessons and applications from this project could be used to help ambulance and emergency services providers improve efficiency across the world, including in rural areas.

Urban mobility learnings

Engineers at Ford’s Research and Innovation Center Palo Alto have been using sensor kits that gather information from bicycles and other common forms of transportation in urban areas.

The devices gather information such as wheel speed, acceleration and altitude, as well as traffic patterns, pedestrian data and road conditions, which is difficult to obtain from vehicle sensors.

Researchers continue exploring how bike and vehicle data can be analyzed together to gain greater understanding of how different transportation modes might best meet future mobility needs.

Rihanna Fronts New Dior AD Campaign ‘Secret Garden’

Love or loathe her, Rhianna sure moves brands. Her recent campaign for lifestyle brand Christian Dior from which pictures were unveiled just yesterday sees the diva pulling her best sultry and seductive poses yet for Dior’s Secret Garden Campaign.

ri1

r3

What is more remarkable is that Ri-Ri is the first female of colour to front a major campaign for the Dior house, which is probably a cunning ploy to attract more women of colour to the brand. In an interview with MTV News in March, the 27 year old Bajan diva commented on the importance of her casting for the campaign which she said was ‘fantastic’ and meaningful.

r6

She went on to add ‘It feels fantastic…”It is such a big deal for me, for my culture, for a lot of young girls of any colour. ‘I think, to be acknowledged by Dior is just, it means a lot as a woman to feel beautiful, and elegant, and timeless”.

r5

Well said and we reckon that the brand are lucky to have the young diva on side, and it is worthwhile noting that beauty really has no colour boundaries, and hopefully more major lifestyle brands would emulate this example. Congratulations Ri-Ri!

Nollywood Veteran Richard Mofe-Damijo Suffering Mystery Ailment

Looking a shadow of his former self, Nollywood veteran Richard Mofe-Damijo is allegedly having a serious health issue. The divo who once set female hearts aflutter is battling a life threatening liver ailment. The news is yet to be confirmed by Richard’s camp, but going by the image that was posted on actress Stella Damasus’s facebook page, all is not well. Her comment that accompanied the image asking people to pray for him set alarm-bells ring. She said:  “One of the Popular Nollywood Actor and a brother from another Mother Richard Mofe-Damijo A.K.A. RMD is currently battling with Live threatening sickness now, this is evident from this picture. May God preserve his life and heal him For us”.

Before and Now

Richard last public outing was on the 9th of May to honour the Nollywood icon and producer Amaka Igwe who sadly passed away from asthma related ailment on the 29th of April 2014. Whatever the ailment is, we wish a speedy recovery for Richard as we still want him to set our hearts aflutter.

Jennifer Lopez & Casper Smart Split…

Say it ain’t so! This was one cougar relationship we believed would go the distance.

J-Lo (44) and toy boy boyfriend Casper Smart (27)  have called it a day on their two and half year relationship. According to celebrity news site TMZ.com, apparently the couple had broken up two months ago, but the news has only come to light. A source close to the couple told TMZ.com that: “They actually split two months ago, but kept it on the down-low, they’re still friendly but simply grew apart.”

J-Lo and Casper’s relationship has been in the media lately, with rumours circulating that Casper had a liaison (sexting) with a transsexual. Sources close to Casper say “Casper has been a single guy and can text or see whoever he wants, but the idea that he was knowingly texting a transsexual is laughable”.

As is the norm in celebrity land, J-Lo and Casper have vowed to remain friends and if recent sighting of the pair who broke up two months ago as the left uber hot spot Craig in West Hollywood is anything to go by, they are staying true to their words.

African Lions Rising

With delegates from across Africa in attendance, the Africa Lions Rising event which was held at the HoneyWell Auditorium, Lagos Business School for the Africa Business Conference proved that the private sector growth in Africa is an arm of the economy that could propel and enhance Intra-African Trade.

The event facilitated a great networking hub where private, businesses, senior public sector representatives and academia were able to forge partnerships to scale their current operations across the continent and shape the Africa of present and beyond.

This year’s event shed light on key issues and opportunities in Africa’s Manufacturing, Energy, Agri-Business, Fashion, ICT, Media & Entertainment and Solid Mineral sectors.

Keynote speaker, Rod Glover Blondin, renowned Economist and Advisor to Africa Exchange Holdings, spoke about trading and creating value across Africa, he said; “African businesses need to put in both economic and social prosperity – Africapitalism. We need to put in a sustainability index, to be a part of social capitalism and do our business with integrity; all these pay off in the end”.

He went on to add; “As private sector proponents, we need to actively voice our concerns, put forward solutions and suggestions, work with the public sector (not for them) and do not fight corruption with corruption”.

Actress Genevieve Nnaji

Actress Genevieve Nnaji, Audu Maikori of Chocolate City Records and Sam Onyemelukwe of Trace TV were also present to shed light on how the booming entertainment industry was helping to grow the African economy.

The second instalment of African Lions Rising proves that enhancing Intra-African Trade via private sector growth  may be the most viable way for Africa to shed the third world economy tag.

“A decade ago, Africa resembled the Asia of the 1960s, a jumble of undemocratic regimes, broken by conflict and poverty, with few prospects for progress. Today the story is different, Africa is one of the fastest-growing continents on Earth!” ~ Unknown

The Discovery Ball was raising money to help fund the expansion of Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital’s world-class Children’s Clinical Research Facility (CCRF).

Established in 2009, the CCRF was the first dedicated children’s research centre in the UK and is now one of only four in the country.  Working with researchers, children and families, the CCRF carries out all types of clinical research, with a specific focus on the testing of new medicines for life-threatening and life-limiting diseases.

Maurice Watkins CBE, Chairman of Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital Charity, said:

“The Discovery Ball was an even greater success than we hoped it would be and, once again, we are indebted to our supporters for their generosity. We are absolutely delighted with our fundraising total and sincerely thank all of our acts who performed on the night for kindly donating their time to support this most worthwhile of fundraising initiatives.”

Manchester-based Infrastructure and Managed Services specialists ANS Group were the event’s headline sponsor. Passionate about engaging their staff in their varied CSR programme, which includes fundraising, environmental initiatives and voluntary work as well as sponsorship, ANS also fosters young talent through their Cloud Academy – a yearlong IT apprenticeship programme that offers both structured training and real hands-on experience.

A long-time supporter of the hospital Scott Fletcher, CEO of ANS Group, said:

“As predicted, the Discovery Ball was a fantastic event and it was heart-warming to see the support coming in from the community. There was a lot of hard work behind the scenes and so we were thrilled to see everything coming together perfectly. It was great to see the fundraising target exceeded, but more than that it was important to get the cause in the forefront of everyone’s minds and draw attention to the hospital and the outstanding work they do in and for our community.”

Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital Charity is raising money to ensure continued excellence in treatment, care and research at the hospital – improving the lives of thousands of children each year across the North West and beyond.

The support of the Charity means that the hospital can provide additional resources that make life easier for patients and their families who use the hospital. The charity has three main areas of work:

  •  to support research projects to improve our understanding of children’s illnesses
  • to help to create an environment that’s more child-friendly
  • to provide state-of-the-art equipment for diagnosis and treatment.

Married 61 Year Old Man – Paul Lovell Convicted Of Sexual Act With A COW!

Stranger than fiction, a 61 year old man has been found guilty of having sex with a cow. The accused Paul Lovell was spotted by witnesses Lawrence Stephen and his girlfriend Natasha Brennan who were having a picnic lunch near the training ground in Enfield, North London on the 4th of September last year.

Paul Lovell

According to the witnesses, Mr Lovell had initially tried it on with a flock of sheep and after his ‘advances’ were rebuffed, he had then moved on to the cow.

Understandably horrified and sickened by the disturbing act, during their witness testimonies, Lawrence had said: “The sheep don’t stand still, they turn to just walk away or move their head so he was unsuccessful a number of times after going towards the main flock of sheep.

“I don’t know what he was trying to do but it seems he was trying to get some sort of sexual act performed from sheep.

“I felt sick for what was happening, it sort of disturbed me, I felt worried about him, also it is not right to do that to animals you know?”

“Well, it was quite bizarre. I don’t think that was normal behaviour and I was concerned for his mental wellbeing,” Natasha Brennan also stated.

Lovell, who was walking around the grounds oblivious to the presence of others with a can of alcoholic beverage [Skol] and his clothing in a Sainsburys shopping bag seemed very comfortable with what he was doing as he thrust his waist towards the cow, using his hands to get the cows mouth towards his crotch area.

It is now known that when the police had arrived and taken him to Edmonton police station, Lovell who denied the charged had claimed to the police that he was simply trying to shoo the cows away so that he could sleep and he was just relaxing. Adding to the bizarre episode Lovell was wearing only a pair of socks and his shoes according to the police, but Lovell claimed that he had he clothing on at all times at the trial.

Prosecutor Richard Hutchinson insisted Lovell was “interested sexually” in the farmyard animals.
he went on to add that Mr Lovell wanted fellatio with the animal and had attempted this by trying to insert his privates into the animal’s anus or vagina.

In his defence, Lovell had claimed that the idea that he was trying to perform a sex act with an animal was “completely ridiculous.”

“The only time that I saw the sheep was when I woke up… I was surrounded by sheep about two metres away, about 10-12 sheep, something like that,” he said.

“I don’t particularly like animals hanging around me when I am sleeping so I sat up and sort of clapped my hands a bit but they didn’t take much notice of that so I stood up briefly and stamped my feet on the ground and clapped my hands again.

“I can understand that somebody from a long distance away would have wondered what was happening when I was trying to chase the sheep away from my location.”

The trial ended with Lovell been convicted of outraging public decency, unclosing ‘fellatio with a cow’

Lovell 61 who had showed no emotion as the verdict was read by the presiding Judge – James Patrick.  The judge stated: “This is a case which as far as I am concerned is unique. At the moment I do not know what sentence I am going to impose.” “Custody is a possibility, so you should not assume I have ruled that out.”

Paul Lovell will be sentenced on Friday March 7th, but has been released on bail until then. However, the condition that he must not go to Whitewebbs Lane or the Archers Wood area of London were lifted by Judge Patrick. DS says farmers be mindful of your cows.
